Selfish Or Self-full?
Selfish? Or Self-Full?
Have you ever considered what your best investment might be?
Simply stated, your best investment: YOURSELF.
Ooohhh . . . that sounds almost SELFISH!!!
Heaven knows we don’t want to be SELFISH!!!
Yet business, success, and spiritual way-showers concur. . . if you don’t take care of YOU first, your business can’t reach its full potential, your family won’t flourish, and you’ll eventually find yourself resenting the very things you love most when you’re energetically spent – because you haven’t had time for YOU.
Think of the classic example we hear each time we board a plane. “In the event of an emergency, put the oxygen mask on yourself first.” In the event of an emergency, we wouldn’t be much good to others for very long if we’re gasping for breath. . . .
Investing in yourself FIRST, before you’re spent – whether it’s with time, money, or energy is the oxygen mask for your life!
Investing in yourself, taking time for yourself isn’t SELFISH, it’s SELF-FULL (as my friend Melissa Risdon reminded us recently).
EAT, PRAY, TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF
I was reminded once again of this wisdom as I was reading a new essay by Elizabeth Gilbert, author of Eat, Pray, Love.
Consider this segment that she shared:
In the Mandarin language, there are two words for “selfish” — one word means “to be greedy or hoarding”, the other word means “to do something good for yourself” — not everything we do that is good for ourselves is necessarily greedy or hoarding.
Look into your own life, and really question whether or not your martyrdom and unhappiness is serving anyone — my martyrdom and unhappiness once served exactly NOBODY.
If you know anything about Elizabeth’s life-journey, you know that it was only WHEN she ‘got selfish’ that her own life began to flourish. It’s why we even know of her today! She reclaimed her life – not the life she was living out of obligation – and not only found joy . . . she found love, depth, richness, and the ability to truly be the soul-full voice she felt she was put here to be.
Only THEN did the work that she’s so well known for become possible.
I’LL HAVE WHAT SHE’S HAVING
What about you?
What’s been ‘calling’ you?
What is life inviting you to get ‘selfish’ about?
What is your soul CRAVING?
What is your body DEMANDING?
Then choose YOU.
Even if it’s only 10-15 minutes a day just for you.
IF YOUR DAUGHTER TREATED HERSELF THE WAY YOU TAKE CARE OF YOU, WOULD YOU BE HAPPY ABOUT IT?
If your beloved daughter was taking care of herself the way you’re taking care of YOURSELF, would you be happy about it?
Would you be worried? Concerned? Alarmed?
Would you feel compelled to intervene?
Hmmmmm. . .
You’re her model for living.
What are you teaching her by your daily life?
Especially if you’re a wife, mother, or business owner!
Time to switch up your daily living
Give yourself permission to take time for you.
Give yourself permission to listen to your own soul’s desires.
Give yourself permission to invest in yourself.
There’s no better time than now.
